Midterm elections are one week away. And, in a world filled with political hostility, Dr. Robert Watson, renowned author and professor of American history at Lynn University, encourages all members of the Lynn community to vote—and to vote responsibly.

To support informed voting, Watson hosted last Thursday “A Primer on the Midterm Election of 2018.” The event was part of the Dialogue Speaker Series. It featured three of Florida’s most prominent female election leaders who joined Watson to explain the importance of voting, how the process works, and voters’ options and rights. They also reviewed the various amendments on this year’s ballot. The event was followed by a small group session with Lynn students and guests.

For 26 years, Watson has published a biennial publication titled “Your Ballot in Plain English.” Its purpose, according to Watson, is to help citizens understand the intentions behind each proposed amendment; what parties, people and organizations are for/against each issue, and which organizations and individuals are fundraising for/against each issue.

“Over the years, elements to watch out for have included double negatives and states trying to add items to their constitutions that have no business in it,” said Robert Watson. “It’s easy to vote items into the constitution, but it’s much harder to vote them out.”
