Earn your stripes
As a criminal justice major, you'll gain a solid understanding of the causes of crime and the application of justice. You'll study topics such as criminology, victimology, psychology and political studies and visit local law enforcement agencies. You'll learn all of this from nationally recognized experts and you'll have the opportunity to speak with professionals in the field.
In this criminal justice degree program, you'll learn the structure and process of the American judicial system and explore and analyze diverse ethical issues that you may encounter as a criminal justice professional. When it's time to graduate, you'll have the knowledge and confidence necessary to assume positions of responsibility and leadership.
Full-time students enrolled in this program can participate in internships in Washington, D.C., for a semester. Once you have earned your criminal justice degree, you may go on to law school or work in a variety of law enforcement careers.
Criminal justice program information
Majoring in criminal justice means learning all the aspects of criminal law, procedures and the courts. In this program, you'll gain a deeper understanding of policing in America, social problems and global human rights. Plus, you'll complete field-based assignments blending theoretical knowledge with practical experience. Here's more information about what you'll study as a criminal justice major:

A study of criminal law, constitutional and statutory provisions, purposes of criminal law, classification of crimes, elements of crimes, defenses available to those accused of a crime, and jurisdiction of the courts.
This course presents an examination of the systematic study of the nature, extent, etiology and control of law-breaking behavior. It seeks to establish empirical knowledge about crime and its control, based upon qualitative and quantitative research that forms a basis for understanding, explanation, prediction, prevention and criminal justice policy.
An overview of the American criminal justice system with emphasis on its major components. This includes a review of the functions of police, courts, corrections and the interrelated structure of the agency. The constitutional rights of an individual from arrest (police) to trial/plea bargaining (courts) through sentencing/release (corrections) will be examined.
