Earn your stripes

As a criminal justice major, you'll gain a solid understanding of the causes of crime and the application of justice. You'll study topics such as criminology, victimology, psychology and political studies and visit local law enforcement agencies. You'll learn all of this from nationally recognized experts and you'll have the opportunity to speak with professionals in the field.

In this criminal justice degree program, you'll learn the structure and process of the American judicial system and explore and analyze diverse ethical issues that you may encounter as a criminal justice professional. When it's time to graduate, you'll have the knowledge and confidence necessary to assume positions of responsibility and leadership.

Full-time students enrolled in this program can participate in internships in Washington, D.C., for a semester. Once you have earned your criminal justice degree, you may go on to law school or work in a variety of law enforcement careers.

Criminal justice program information

Majoring in criminal justice means learning all the aspects of criminal law, procedures and the courts. In this program, you'll gain a deeper understanding of policing in America, social problems and global human rights. Plus, you'll complete field-based assignments blending theoretical knowledge with practical experience. Here's more information about what you'll study as a criminal justice major:

Career opportunities

Learning existing law enforcement systems, judicial systems and correctional systems helps you land the job of your dreams. After graduation, you'll have access to a variety of careers and industries in the criminal justice field.

Victims advocate/services

Victims advocates provide both emotional and material support to those lying in the wake of a crime. Many victims experience trauma mental and physical trauma; advocates are the ones who help those victims process and endure the fallout.

Crime prevention specialist

Crime prevention specialists help to create safer communities by formulating crime prevention strategies. They make recommendations and implement more reliable security measures.

Private security

Private security guards patrol work sites, office buildings or other private facilities. They may work day or night shifts and will make rounds to ensure that all access points are secure and monitor security camera on the grounds.

Corrections officer

Corrections officers enforce law and order within a prison system or holding facility. They oversee the safety and conduct of inmates during daily regimens, and keep track of violations for appropriate disciplinary measures.
